Look out Buffalo

Do NOT look a Buffalo in the EYE!

After yesterday's grueling experience on the treadmill, I thought that I would share a bit of good news with you.

I registered for the Buffalo Race on March 22, 2013.  This will be held at Antelope Island.  I registered for the 25k trail run.  I have been thinking about this race for about 9 months now. Yesterday, I finally hit the "confirm" button, and now I am in.

So here is a little Sunday morning light reading. This is a copy of the waiver that I signed. It cracked me up!

Ok, you know the drill. This entry contains limitations of your legal rights, so read it. If you get hurt, it’s your fault, you shouldn’t have been here. I know that there are hazards associated with running this race. These hazards can include, but are not limited to, bikers, hikers, horses, very large wild animals, roots, rocks, trees, other assorted wildlife, flora and fauna, and other crazed runners. Having read that last sentence, I am certifying that I understand these risks and I am properly trained to participate. By running this race I, and my estate, will hold harmless anybody or organization officially associated with the race. This includes Antelope Island State Park and their employees, the State of Utah, the Race Director and his minions, Buffalo Run Adventures, LLC, and any of our sponsors. I also agree to abide by the rules of the race and acknowledge that the Race Director’s word is final. I also agree that by running the ultra, I know I’m nuts and should know better than to do something like this, but, hey, it’s fun and impresses the opposite sex. If you are under 18, you can run any race, with your parents and the race directors’ permission. Also keep in mind that your picture will be taken numerous times by various people. By signing off on this waiver, you’re telling us that it’s ok for us to use that picture however we want. Don’t worry, we’ll try not to embarrass you.

Lack of.....

Today was a cold day.  I tried to talk my friend Jay, (a big wig at Starbucks in Seattle), into implementing a Starbucks delivery program.  Told him I needed a "Whipping Skinny Quad Shot Mocha with Extra CHOCOLATE! He just laughed and told me it was 50 degrees and Sunny there!

I was looking forward to an easy 11 miles outside today. That little bit of enthusiasm soon changed.  The weather here in the valley has been so gloomy. The INVERSION has settled here in Cache Valley.  Cold, red air days, and lack of being able to see the blue sky seems to be taking its toll on many of us.

When I woke up the temperature was -10.  At 10:00 it was 1 degree.  I kept putting off running, in hopes it would get better. It didn't. And it only got worse after that.

I went to the gym. Yes I did 11 miles on Satan's Sidewalk.  And yes, it was not pretty. Those 11 miles took me forever to get in. I was on the treadmill for 2 hours and 19 minutes to be exact.   At mile 9, I just wanted to be DONE.  I thought about hitting STOP.  But I didn't.  I began to notice that my feet were not landing softly on the treadmill anymore. I had become a "Clomper."  I kept trying to mix it up by walking, adjusting the incline, even jogging backwards. The speakers on my treadmill would not allow me to listen to a TV. My ipod music was not motivating me. My mind and heart just wasn't in it.

I am chalking this one up to:
Lack of Sleep (fell asleep at 3:15 am, woke up at  5:37 am)
Lack of Nutrition (Saturday's meals before I ran consisted of Special K cereal and CLIFF chomps @ the gym)
Lack of Understanding (What the CRAP?)
Lack of Inspiration (now why am I doing this?)
Lack of Strategy (so left foot then the right?)
Lack of Interest (I am SO BORED!)
Lack of Focus (My body felt fine. Breathing was great. Heart Rate was perfect, my Mind was racing elsewhere)
Lack of Confidence (I hate it when I start to doubt what I know I can do!)

In Your Face, Jack Frost

This morning I woke up at 7 am, all excited to go outside and run 10 miles. When I looked at the temperature, it was -12!   MINUS TWELVE!!!

I ho-hummed around the house for a few hours, then finally made the decision that I would have to succumb to Satan's Sidewalk.  I checked FB just before I left, and my friend Tara said that she was going outside to run!  Well, the seed had been planted, and I went with it.

I quickly changed my running outfit to a more climate friendly attire, and headed into Providence, to run one of my favorite routes.  I did take clothing for the gym, just in case it got too cold.

Running today was a slow and safe pace. I tried to run on the sidewalks when I could, when they were shoveled. I had to run on the road at times too, and when traffic would approach, I would scoot over as much as I could. At certain points I was running through wet, soft, slippery, slushy snow. At mile 8.25, I just wanted to be done. I wasn't that cold. I wasn't exhausted.  My legs were moving pretty slow and I just wanted to be done.  Took me about 2 hours to go 10 miles today, so running in the cold and snow is alot slower.
People pay money to have their hair "frosted"

I took my hydration pack with me, and when I went to get a drink, my Powerade was a slushy!!!

I am crossing off something on my bucket list today. The day that my mileage exceeded the temperature!  When I got back to the car, the temp was 5, and my mileage today was 10! So ya, In Your Face Jack Frost!

Today I discovered that I like running in the cold.  It's not as bad as people think it is. Now if I could just figure out how to keep my camera battery warm. (I was only able to take 1 photo outside today, because it was so cold. But when I got back to the car, it worked.)

Resolution RUN 10k

I am pointing to what I wrote...."First Full 26.2  Lori B.S."

This morning I woke up at 5:30 to drive to Kaysville to run 6 miles.  Am I crazy??  The temperature at my house was -11!  I was hoping for at least 1 degree.

Jacque and her friend were my cheerleaders. (Well, I bribed them. I told them that we could stop at the Layton Hills Mall after the run)  We left about 6:15 am to be to packet pickup by 7:30.

I won this entry from the Utah Running Guide.  The run started at Boondocks.  This was really nice, because it gave all runners a place to sit and stay warm before the event.

I only knew one other person that was running this.  Suzy.  She also won an entry. I met her at the Snow Canyon Half. She will be on my Ruby Mountain Relay team in August.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.........

Lets just say this man enjoys color. His black shorts had a matching green stripe, and he had on green shoes too.  I tried to stand just kind of by him and was going to have Jacque take a picture, but then he moved!  I thought it was just females who tried to be matchy matchy.

Running is my Favorite!

I ran the 10k.  The temperature at start time was 5 degrees! (My friends who were running the New Years Half started with temps at -4!)  I was excited to be running. I haven't ran since New Year's Day.

I was not really into the "racing" mode. I just wanted to run, preferably somewhere warmer than Cache Valley.  During the race, my hair froze, and my eyelashes started sticking together.

I stopped to take a few photos with my phone, then my phone actually "froze." Like the cold freeze. And try as I might, I could not call, receive info, or take any more photos. It was so cold, it was just froze on the previous picture.

We ran on the Rio Grande trail and through residential areas.  The gates to the trail were frozen shut. Kaysville city could not get them open, so we zig zagged through them.  The aid station was at mile one. All the other runners just kept running by. No one was stopping. Of course I had to stop to visit with this cute mom and daughter! I took a drink of the water. I had to laugh, because it was so cold that the water was a slushy. This mom and her daughter were awesome to be out there in that cold, cold morning.

The BEST aid station EVER!

I was very surprised with my time of 1.03.47.  As I said, I was not really into the racing mode, I was using this run as my long run for the week.

Guess who took 3rd in her age group?  Yep.....ME!

Truth be known, there were only 3 in my age group, but hey, I still took 3rd!
I am holding up 9 fingers. I actually ran 9 miles this morning.
